Note:Specimen source type required

Sault Laboratory

Sample transport containers:

1. Vaginal, Endocervical, Pharyngeal, Rectal specimens must be collected using the GeneXpert swab collection kits
2. Urine: transfer urine specimen to the dashed fill line on the yellow topped Xpert Urine Specimen Collection Kit.
3. If kit is not available, promptly send urine sample to the laboratory refrigerated.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

Negative

Monday through Friday

Vaginal (may be self-collected by patient).

1. Insert swab about 5mm past introitus and rotate gently for 30 seconds.

2. Place swab in collection tube and snap off at score line so swab fits into tube.

3. Cap tube securely and label with patient name, DOB, date, and time of collection.

Endocervix

1. Remove excess mucus from exocervix with medium cleaning swab provided and discard.

2. Insert second medium swab into endocervix and rotate swab for 15 to 30 seconds to ensure adequate sampling.

3. Withdraw swab.

4. Holding tube upright, verify that all transport medium is at bottom of transport tube. Unscrew cap of transport tube, fully insert swab into tube, and break swab at score line. Screw cap on securely.

5. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and time of collection, and type of specimen.

1. Spermicidal agents and feminine powder sprays interfere with the assay and should not be used prior to collection.

Urethra (Males Only)

1. Patient should not have urinated for at least 1 hour prior to specimen collection.

2. Insert small-tipped specimen swab 2 to 4 cm into urethra and rotate swab for 3 to 5 seconds to ensure adequate sampling.

3. Withdraw swab.

4. Holding tube upright, verify that all transport medium is at bottom of transport tube. Unscrew cap of transport tube, fully insert swab into tube, and break swab at score line. Screw cap on securely.

5. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and time of collection, and type of specimen.

Urine (Male and Female)

1. Patient should not have urinated for at least 1 hour prior to specimen collection.
2. Patient should collect first portion of a voided urine (first part of stream-not midstream) into a screw-capped, sterile, plastic, preservative-free specimen collection container. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and time of collection, and type of specimen.
3. Urine samples must be poured off to the fill line into yellow Cobas transport container within 24 hours of collection.
4. Send 15 to 20 mL of urine refrigerated if Cobas transport container unavailable
