Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of collection.

Specimen: Submit an olive sized sample of stool in a screw-capped, sterile container in a tightly-sealing plastic bag.

Specimen Viability: 24 hrs, refrigerated

Alternate Collection: Submitting a diaper, which contains the fecal specimen, is acceptable if the stool has not completely soaked into the diaper material.

Alternatively, for a liquid stool from a patient still in diapers:

1. Turn a disposable diaper inside out (plastic liner next to the skin) to collect the sample. Pour the liquid (1 teaspoon is enough) into a clean, dry container.
2. Line the diaper with plastic wrap to prevent the liquid from filtering into the diaper. Fold the plastic wrap to collect the sample and insert it into a clean, dry container.
