Container/Tube: Serum gel tube
Specimen Volume: 2.5 mL of serum
Collection Instructions: Allow specimen to clot for 30 minutes. Spin specimen in centrifuge.
Specimen Viability: It is preferable to test samples on the day of their collection. If samples cannot be tested immediately, maintain them in their original tubes at 2-8°C and test within 48 hours.
Latex Agglutination
The ASI ASO Slide Test is a latex slide agglutination assay for the qualitative and semiquantitative detection of antistreptolysin-O (ASO) antibodies in human serum.
A single determination of antibodies to streptococcal A extracellular antigens is not as significant as serial titrations performed at weekly or biweekly intervals for up to 6 weeks following infection. Sequential determination can give trend of patient’s antibody production, and also with monitoring progress and treatment of infection.
Note: Positive tests will automatically be titered to endpoint.
<5 years: 100-200 units (normal)
Repeat in 1-2 weeks to determine if there is an increase in titer.
>5 years: Negative
It is common to detect ASO antibodies in most of the population with titers varying according to geographical location and age distribution. Increased ASO titers may be associated with rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis. An ASO titer of more than 200 IU/ml might be indicative of streptococcal infection. The titer should be monitored over a time period of 4 to 6 weeks.
