1. Catheterized (CATH), Voided (VD), and Clean Catch Mid-Stream (CCMS) samples are the specimen of choice to prevent the possibility of a positive leukocyte test caused by leukocytes external to the renal-urinary system. Pediatric samples collected with a UBAG are also acceptable.
2. A first morning specimen is preferred but random collections are acceptable. The urine must be tested within 2 hours of voiding. If unable to test within the recommended time, refrigerate the specimen immediately and let it return to room temperature before testing.
3. Urines that are refrigerated are stable for 24 hours.
4. Use of preservatives may affect test results.
5. Urine specimens must be labeled with the patient's first and last name, date of birth as well as source and the date and time of collection. Unlabeled specimens will be discarded and collection repeated.
6. Urine specimens are saved refrigerated for 48 hours.

Note: This testing is performed on all routine urinalysis. If all parameters are normal and urine is not turbid, a microscopic exam is not performed unless specified by the ordering physician.

Test Ordering

UAI: Urinalysis routine with microscopic if indicated. When urine specimens are clear and all of the dipstick tests are negative or in the normal range, a urine microscopic need not be done. If any of the dipstick tests are positive or a pH of 8.0 or higher, the LIS system will automatically order a UMIC test. Follow the procedure below for reporting of microscopic elements.

UAMIC: This test is a combination of a urine dipstick test and a microscopic analysis of the urine sediment. Microscopic analysis will be done regardless of the dipstick results. Follow procedure for reporting of the microscopic elements.

UACI: A UACI is a combination of urine dipstick test and microscopic analysis of the urine sediment with the ability to reflex test to Urine Culture (LIS test code CUR). Microscopic analysis will be done regardless of the dipstick results. Follow procedure for reporting of the microscopic elements.

NOTE: When a UACI is ordered use the Criteria to determine reflex testing for Urine Culture. Specimen will reflex to a urine culture if any one of the following criteria is present:

1. Positive nitrite on reagent strip
2. Positive leukocyte esterase moderate to large
3. >10 WBC's/HPF on microscopic exam.
